Newsletter 4: How Do You Know If You Have Good Genetics [In General]

I’m a genetic educator, my role is to educate everyone – students, scientists and even common people on genetics, their DNA and genes, etc. This is the question I had in my mind for years.

How do we know if we have good genetics?” or not! There is no such test or 100% accurate technique to determine that. Hence, it’s nearly impossible to ‘quantitatively’ determine it.

Our team prepared a small test, like a fun activity, to let you know how good or bad your genetics is! But before that, we need to understand some key points.

There are three important points we need to know about our DNA or genetics in general.

  1. We inherit the exact same DNA from our parents.
  2. Our gene expression profile is dynamic, altered by various factors.
  3. During fetal development, cells prepare an entirely new DNA combination for the fetus.

These three facts make the present question unanswerable! The reason being, our DNA is exactly similar to our parents, but with a new or we can say updated version and… is still changing, every day, minute and second!

There is another factor, which is also as crucial as these three – the demography! Let me explain it,

People living in coastal areas and high-temperature zones are naturally fit, tall and strong with good muscle mass. Conversely, people living in the mountains naturally have good oxygen-carrying capacity and have amazing endurance.

That’s because of the differences in genetics!

Now, imagine how to map something so dynamic. But let’s make it a bit interesting. I prepared some questions. If you answer them with Yes/No, at the end, you can say if your genetics are good or not!

Trust me, it is a fun game.

Click the link and visit our website to explore the complete list of questions.

  1. Are you born with any genetic abnormality or birth defect? – cleft palate, heart defects (major/minor), limb differences or any other.
  2. Do you have any other genetic mutation (usually not harmful)? – extra digit, different eye color, pigmentation, etc.
  3. Do any of your family members have any genetic, birth or developmental abnormalities? – on both paternal and maternal side, if so, how many?
  4. Did you hit puberty early or late? In comparison to others?
  5. Are there any genetic conditions like color blindness, albinism, or dwarfism in your family?
  6. Do you get frequent infections, allergies or illnesses?
  7. How many close family members have habits like extreme alcohol addiction, tobacco or other addictions?
  8. Are you physically stronger or weaker than others?
  9. Are you more or less intelligent than others?
  10. Has anyone from your family been diagnosed with heart, neurological disease or cancer before the age of 40?

I don’t know what would be a good score, trust me, but if you pass all 10 questions, that means you have good genetics.

Reply to this email or comment on our blog. If you pass all 10 questions, we will feature you on your Instagram page.

This activity is interesting. If I get an amazing response, our team will do more research, make a complete list of questions and answers as MCQ, and will give a rough score – how good your genetics is!

We will also do a live chat with those who reply and explore more on this. I hope you enjoyed this newsletter. Subscribe to Genetic Education.
